Section 5 (Ch. 20-23)
1. Jonas and the elder have a plan that is “… barely possible. If it failed, he would very likely be killed.” Comment on Jonas’s motivation for even attempting his plan.
2. Do you think the story has a happy ending or a sad ending? Explain your feelings.

Happy ending because after their cruel , harsh, and long journey the finally fiind a place to live happily unlike seeing only black and white or letting people make your own choices. They also arrived at a time of year where everyone is happy so if a person finds them they might even have a family to live with.

I thought that THE GIVER had a happy ending because they finally found a new community that was just like the community in the Giver’s memories. I thought it was a real house and people celebrating Christmas, not a memory because all Jonas’s memories should be gone by now. (That is what I believe…) All the memories from the old community should have gone back to the community.

I will answer #2.
In my opinion, and in of course many others, every book should have a happy ending. Optimism is overwhelming me when I think of Jonas and Gabe at the end of this story. As you might already figure out from my pevious statements, I strongly feel that there should be a good and cheerful ending for this book.
Jonas first escapes with Gabe from the community. They travel and struggle to survive through perils of which they have never experienced before. They almost die in the wilderness, but they finally make, though terribly weak. But the sound of music, which brought up the happiness in their heart, rang in their ears. They knew they had finally reached Elsewhere, and perceived that this place had feelings and true happiness.
I think they were accepted by another family, and lived happily ever after…a life with love, happiness, and many more feelings.

I thought this story had a happy ending when they finally made it to their destination. I really wasn’t sure if they were going to survive the tense wheather before they got to the next community. That part made me really anxious in finishing the book to see what would happen next. I thought the ending was good for Jonas and Gabriel but not so good fof his old parents, because they think Jonas drowned in the river and Gabriel had ran away wich he was supposed to be scheduled for release in the morning.

Joans wanted to see what was beyond all this stupid gray in his life. He wants to see if elsewhere there is a better life, with people full of emotions, and people that can hear music, and see colors, just like they should be able to everywhere else in the world.
He also is motivated by Gabe. If Jonas hadn’t taken Gabe with him, then he would have been realesed (joyfully I might add by Jonas’s father) the very next day (I think). Jonas was motivated to keep on trying to get to “Elsewhere” whenerver he sees Gabe’s little face, cold and tearstained. He keeps saying to himself “I can’t let this little spark of life die, he has to survive” so he tries even harderto reach his goal.Think of how easily he could have given up and fallen into that snow and be left to die. But, when he saw Gabe’s face, he tried unmeasurably to keep Gabe alive as long as possible.
I owuld say the end was a happy ending because everything that he had remembered from his memories from The Giver were all there !: colors,music, normal people, families, christmas trees,etc

Well #2. is more comfortable for me.
I think that the ending of the story was very happy, yet you don’t know what will happen after that. Like maybe the people won’t take him and Gabriel in their community. It is still a happy ending, and besides, don’t all books have happy endings?
They really struggled to run away and find another community. There were so many hardships when they were escaping, and I thought that Gabe was going to die. Jonas just wants everything safe for Gabe’s life. He even almost died for him.
Then in the end, he hears something of the Giver’s called music. Then he has some hope, and he begins to feel happiness. This was a big struggle in the wilderness, but resulted in a happy home with a happy, loving family celebrating Christmas. As all of his hope was gone, in the end, he probably lives happily ever after (probably) He He ?!?!

Jonas did make it to the “Elsewhere”, but I think that the story has a pretty sad ending. Jonas had to leave all he knew about behind. He faced so many dangerous weathers and having to hide himself all the time from planes was sad. He didn’t have enough memories to keep Gabe and Jonas alive and warm in the blizzard. It was so sad that they ran out of food. I really thought that all this torture was sad. He couldn’t even sleep because he was hungry. It was sad that he had to lkeave Fiona behind because he loved her and he may never find another lover again. It was really really sad for Jonas to leave his community and that really must have made him feel regretful
I personally think that the story was a sad ending even though Jonas found the “Elswhere”.
(It would have been better if he brought Fiona along…at least)

Oh! I forgot to add that he should have taken the Giver. If that part changed to him taking the Giver along as well, the story would have been a little more happier.
